Description
Vitamin B3 (niacin, nicotinacid, nicotinamide) is part of the so called Vitamin B-complex. Vitamin B consists of multiple single vitamins, and are water soluble. They contribute in a normal energy metabolism, in the maintenance of a normal skin, in a normal mental performance, in the maintenance of a normal structure and functioning of mucous membranes, in a reduction of fatigue and a normal functioning of the nervous system.
Vitamin B3 is found in meat, fish, nuts, seeds and grains. The human body is also able to produce vitamin B3 from the amino acid tryptophane. For this reason, protein rich food products like dairy, eggs contribute to the supply of niacine.
Vitamin B3 is found in two forms: nicotinacid and nicotinamid. In the use of larger amounts of nicotinamid no negative side effects are known. This form is mainly used in supplements and enriched foods. Nicotinacid, which is also used, is responsible for the widening of blood vessels in the skin (flushing). This has no negative side effects.
Vitamin B3 with Niacin consists a special form of niacin, inositol hexanicotinate, consisting of 6 molecules of niacin, linked to inositol. The product is hydrolysed in the body very slowly, preventing the ‘flushing’ effect.
